Birth Rates Decrease, Death Rates Increase According to New Study on Egypt

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) revealed that Egypt’s birth rates have declined with an increase in deaths during 2018, in comparison to 2017. With 2.3 million births last year compared to 2.5 million the year before, Cairo topped the list of governorates, with a decline of 6.8%.

South Sinai governorate came in last, with 3,023 births compared to 3,140 in 2017; a decrease of 3.7 percent. The sex ratio at birth across the whole country was 105 males per 100 females in 2018, the same ratio as in 2017, with the number of male births reaching 1.2 million, compared to 2017’s 1.3 million, and the number of female births at 1.1 million, compared to last year’s 1.2 million; making the decrease in male births 6.9% and females 6.8%.

The number of deaths in 2018 reached 560,000 compared to last year’s 547,000 – an increase of 2.4%, with Cairo coming in first again with 88,000 cases compared to 85,000 in 2017 – an increase of 3.8%. Again, South Sinai came in last with 687 cases against last year’s 651 – an increase of 5.5%. The number of male deaths was 306,000 compared to 300,000, and females 253,000 to 246,000 in 2017.

Males accounted for 54.8% of the total death rate in Egypt in 2018. The natural increase in the population fell from 2.010 million in 2017 to 1.822 million in 2018, a decrease of roughly 188,000 people, the agency said in a press release on Sunday.
