Out with Tuk-Tuks, In with Mini-Vans: Egypt Outlines Plans to Ban and Replace Rickshaws

Considered the scourge of the already chaotic streets of Egypt, tuk-tuks (also known as rickshaws) could well soon be a thing of the past. Egypt's Prime Minister, Moustafa Madbouli, has outlined a new plan to put the much spoken of banning of the largely unlicensed vehicles into action - byreplacing tuk-tuks with mini-vans.

The government will buy the tuktuks from the owners, give them a licensed and recorded natural gas-powered minivan in return, with owners pay the price difference of both vehicles in soft loans. Madbouli also revealed that he has ordered tuk-tuk assembling manufacturers to stop producing, according to a statement following Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.

Last year, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics said that the number of licensed tuk-tuk had reached 99,000 by 2016 and was steadily increasing, but warned that the number of unlicensed tuk-tuks had hit the 4 million mark.
